The Cognitive Benefits of Learning New Sports as an Adult

There’s a point in adulthood when movement can become remarkably predictable.

We find the workouts we like. We run the same routes, lift familiar weights, ride familiar roads and repeat movements our bodies already know how to execute. We can continue getting stronger and faster within those patterns, but we’re rarely asking ourselves to learn an entirely new way to move. There’s a strong case for changing that.

Taking up a new sport like climbing, surfing, tennis, boxing, skiing, mountain biking, etc. introduces something traditional exercise often intentionally removes: uncertainty.

You have to watch, react, balance, anticipate, make decisions and adjust your body in real time. And emerging research suggests those demands could have benefits that extend beyond physical fitness.

YOUR BRAIN KNOWS THE DIFFERENCE

Exercise scientists often divide physical activity into two categories: closed-skill and open-skill exercise.

Closed-skill activities take place in relatively predictable environments. Think running, swimming, rowing or cycling on a stationary bike. Open-skill sports require constant responses to changing information: the trajectory of a tennis ball, the movement of an opponent, an unfamiliar climbing route or terrain changing beneath your feet.

Both are valuable forms of movement though cognitively, they don't ask exactly the same thing of us. A 2024 systematic review published in the British Journal of Hospital Medicine examined 30 studies comparing open- and closed-skill sports across different age groups. Researchers found that open-skill sports showed advantages in aspects of inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility, while adults also demonstrated greater accuracy on working-memory tasks.

That matters because these are executive functions we use far beyond sport. Cognitive flexibility helps us shift strategies when circumstances change. Inhibitory control helps us filter distractions and suppress inappropriate responses. Working memory allows us to hold and manipulate information while we're doing something else.

A newer meta-analysis published in Brain and Behavior in 2025 similarly examined executive-function differences among athletes, including differences between open- and closed-skill sports, adding to a growing body of research investigating how the cognitive demands of sport may matter alongside its cardiovascular and muscular demands.

The distinction gives us another way to think about movement: What does this activity require my brain to do?

LEARNING MOVEMENT CHANGES THE BRAIN

The case becomes even more interesting when we look specifically at learning. In 2023, researchers writing in NeuroImage followed healthy adults as they trained on a complex motor task for four weeks. Using volumetric and myelin-sensitive MRI, they detected changes across gray and white matter within motor and limbic systems as participants acquired the skill. The researchers didn't simply find one static change. They observed waves of microstructural plasticity unfolding across different brain regions at different times during learning. In other words, learning a physical skill is not simply your muscles figuring something out.

Your brain is adapting alongside them.

Another 2023 study published in Cerebral Cortex examined motor-skill acquisition in healthy older adults using functional MRI. As participants practiced a new sequential grip task, learning was accompanied by changing activity across secondary motor and associative brain regions.

The ability to learn movement persists well beyond childhood. That gives trying a new sport a different meaning. You're giving the nervous system unfamiliar information and asking it to build a solution.

SPORT ADDS CHAOS

Much of modern fitness is designed around control. A treadmill maintains its pace. A barbell follows a rehearsed path. A stationary bike doesn't suddenly change direction. Predictability is useful because it allows us to measure performance, repeat movements and progressively overload the body. Sport gives some of that control back to the environment.

A climbing route forces you to determine where your body fits next. A tennis opponent doesn't return the ball to the same location every time. A wave changes underneath you. A trail introduces roots, rocks, elevation and unstable surfaces without asking whether you're ready. You perceive. Decide. Move. Correct.

A 2024 study published in Scientific Reports used functional near-infrared spectroscopy to compare young adults participating in open-skill badminton and closed-skill calisthenics. Researchers observed differences in prefrontal brain activity during cognitive testing. Open-skill exercise performed particularly well for cognitive inhibition, while closed-skill exercise showed an advantage for working memory in that experiment.

That's an important distinction: open-skill sport isn't universally “better” for the brain. Different kinds of movement appear to challenge cognition differently. The opportunity may be in having both.

ADULTS NEED BEGINNERHOOD

Adults build lives around competence. We become good at our jobs, establish routines, gravitate toward workouts we understand and environments where we know what we're doing. Learning a sport disrupts that. Your first tennis serve might hit the fence and you might spend an entire surf lesson trying to stand up. A beginner climbing route can leave you staring at the wall with no idea where your foot should go next. For a while, you're bad. Like, really bad. But being really bad is actually really good for your brain.

Over time, something clicks. You read the ball earlier. Your feet find the hold without consciously searching for it. You recognize where the wave is going. A movement that once required complete concentration begins to feel automatic. That transition is learning made physical, and learning also increased your cognitive load and capacity. Trying new things literally makes you smarter.

YOU DON'T NEED ANOTHER FITNESS IDENTITY

Trying a new sport doesn't require becoming a “tennis person” or restructuring your life around climbing.

Take six lessons. Rent the equipment. Join the beginner group. Try something seasonal. Pick up a sport you abandoned at 15. Choose an activity where you have to pay attention to something other than calories, pace, reps or heart rate.

Running, strength training, cardiovascular fitness, and mobility all still matter, but the body is capable of more than producing output. It can learn, and adulthood is a very good time to keep asking it to.
