How Nature Changes Your Brain During Everyday Activities

There’s a reason the same three miles can feel different on a trail than they do on a treadmill, or why coffee tastes better on a stoop. Conversations seem to move more easily on a walk and 30 minutes spent reading under a tree can feel fundamentally different from 30 minutes under fluorescent lights.

We’ve reduced the explanation to a familiar piece of wellness advice: Get outside.

Moving an activity outdoors changes the environment your brain and body have to respond to. There’s brighter and more dynamic light, more complex visual information and constant variation in temperature, sound and terrain. In natural settings, vegetation, water and wildlife introduce even more sensory input. Rather than nature acting as some singular healing force, research suggests these environmental differences can influence attention, mood, circadian biology and even how we experience movement. Outside isn’t just the backdrop.

The Brain Knows Where You Are

The brain doesn’t experience an office, city sidewalk and forest as interchangeable environments. One theory for why comes from attention restoration theory, which proposes that the directed attention we use to concentrate, ignore distractions and complete mentally demanding tasks can become fatigued. Natural environments may engage our attention differently, giving some of those cognitive systems an opportunity to recover.

Researchers have started looking for evidence of that effect in the brain itself.

In a 2024 randomized controlled trial published in Scientific Reports, researchers assigned 92 participants to either a 40-minute nature walk or an urban walk. The researchers controlled for variables including distance, pace, heart rate, temperature, humidity and elevation change. Both groups reported improved mood after walking, while the nature group experienced a greater increase in positive affect. EEG measurements also showed differences in frontal midline theta activity, a brain signal associated with executive attention.

Walking itself is beneficial. Where you walk may alter what your brain has to process while you’re doing it. Cities demand attention in ways we rarely notice. The brain is continuously deciding what deserves attention and what can safely be ignored. Though a natural environment isn’t necessarily devoid of stimulation. Leaves move, water changes direction, birds appear and disappear, light shifts through trees. The difference may be in how that stimulation asks for our attention and what sends our nervous system into overdrive versus what soothes it. 

Take the Workout Outside

Exercise already has an enormous body of evidence supporting its role in physical and mental health and you don’t need a forest to make a workout count. Moving the workout outside, however, may change the experience.

Researchers sometimes refer to physical activity performed in natural environments as “green exercise.” Research examining outdoor exercise has found evidence of improvements in outcomes including mood, enjoyment and positive affect, although study quality and methodology vary considerably. The evidence does not justify claiming that a 5K through a park is inherently a better workout than a 5K on a treadmill. Exercise intensity, training goals, environmental conditions and individual preference still matter. What outdoor exercise may offer is something harder to capture on a training plan: a different experience of effort.

There is potentially more sensory variation, and if those differences make movement more enjoyable, that's a big deal. The best exercise program isn’t simply the one that produces the greatest theoretical adaptation, it's one you’ll actually return to.

Outside Is a Different Light Environment

Light is one of the most important environmental signals governing the human circadian system, the roughly 24-hour biological rhythms involved in sleep, wakefulness and numerous physiological processes. Our eyes do more than allow us to see the world. Specialized light-sensitive cells in the retina detect environmental light and communicate that information to the brain’s central circadian clock.

Indoor and outdoor light are not equivalent.

A room that appears brightly lit can provide substantially less light than we encounter outdoors during the day. Timing matters, too. Daytime light exposure provides information the circadian system uses to align itself with the external environment, while exposure to light at night can shift circadian timing. This gives the morning walk another dimension.

Nature Doesn’t Need to Become Another Prescription

One of the most widely cited studies on nature exposure involved nearly 20,000 adults in England.

Published in Scientific Reports in 2019, the study found that people who reported spending at least 120 minutes in nature during the previous week were more likely to report good health and high well-being than people who reported no recreational nature exposure. It didn’t appear to matter whether those 120 minutes occurred during one long outing or several shorter visits.

Two hours in nature each week subsequently became an irresistible headline.

The study was observational. It identified an association between nature exposure and self-reported health and well-being. It did not establish that spending precisely 120 minutes outside causes better health, and the researchers called for additional prospective and experimental research before anything resembling formal exposure guidelines could be established. The nuance is important because wellness culture has a habit of turning interesting science into another assignment.

Ten thousand steps. Eight glasses of water. A perfect sleep score. A morning routine performed in precisely the correct order. We don’t need to do that to nature. There is no reason to turn going outside into another metric to optimize.

Keep the Behavior. Change the Setting.

Nature isn’t medicine in the conventional sense, and going outside isn’t a cure for chronic stress, inadequate sleep, loneliness or disease.

Our brain responds to the environments we put it in. Our circadian systems respond to light. Our attention responds to different forms of stimulation. Our experience of movement can change with our surroundings. Across a growing body of research, contact with natural environments is associated with meaningful differences in several measures of mental well-being.

Take the meeting on a walk. Drink your coffee on the steps. Eat lunch outside. Move the workout to the park. Call someone and walk without a destination. Read under a tree. Sit near the water and resist the urge to make the moment productive.

Keep the behavior. Change the setting.
